Freeze cups and/or freeze plates, also known as core plugs, frost plugs or freeze plugs, are used in every engine. They are available in a curved version without a raised edge (freeze plates) or with a raised edge (freeze cups). We treat both as freeze plugs here. These metal seals are mainly located in the engine block, cylinder head, and intake manifold and seal the casting holes left behind during the engine manufacturing process. More importantly, they protect the engine block if the cooling system freezes due to the use of the wrong coolant. Due to expansion, the freeze stops will be pushed out of the block, minimizing cracks in the block. Over time, freeze stops can corrode or leak, requiring immediate replacement to prevent coolant loss and possible engine overheating. At Wilmink Engine Parts, we offer a wide range of freeze stops for different engine types. |
A freeze stop seals by the design of the stop. The most commonly used is the freeze cup. Cup refers to the raised edge. The cup is always mounted with the raised side facing outwards. The pressure from the cooling system wants to push the cup outwards, causing the edge of the cup to be pressed against the block by deformation of the cup, thus ensuring a seal. The freezer plate works in the same way. A freezer plate is therefore installed with the convex side facing the block.
When removing a freeze plug, carefully tap or pry loose the damaged or corroded plate. Start by draining the coolant. Then, using a freeze plug remover or a screwdriver and hammer, carefully tap the edge of the plug to turn it. Once one side tilts inward, grasp it with pliers to remove it. Always inspect the sealing surface and clean it thoroughly before installing a new freeze plug.
Clean the plug hole thoroughly and preferably install the freeze plug dry in the hole. If the hole is not completely clean, a suitable sealant can be used. It is very important to use the right tools to avoid deforming the plug during installation. This can be done easily with a suitable cap from a socket wrench set. Once the plug is properly aligned, tap it gently into place. The edge of the plug should be slightly recessed in the hole. Some people prefer expandable freezer stops, which are secured with a bolt instead of being hammered into place. Proper installation is essential to prevent leaks and future engine damage.
The dimensions of freeze plugs vary depending on the engine type and brand. They are often measured in millimeters or inches, so accurate measurement is important. The plug you need is indicated by the diameter of the hole it needs to seal. We offer a wide selection for various applications, ranging from car engines to marine engines.
