The temperatures in an engine block can get very high. Besides lubricating the engine, heat is also given off to this oil. On some vehicles, external oil coolers are fitted to accurately control the temperature management. There are oil coolers that cool the engine oil as well as the automatic transmission oil and, in some cases, differential oil. Oil coolers are part of the vehicle's oil circuit. Hot oil is pumped to the cooler. After cooling in the oil cooler, the oil flows on to the sump to be re-pumped by the engine from there. Oil coolers are relatively susceptible to damage caused by stone chips, for example, because the oil cooler is mounted low. An old oil cooler should be replaced in time to prevent leakage.
This video from MSI briefly and concisely explains how an oil cooler works.
